Brown Roof - Hackney, London. Client: Public Sector, Olympic project

Installation Date: February 2009

Location: Hackney, East London

Brief:  To create a biodiverse roof with an abundance of features to encourage invertebrates and plant life in an area of regeneration.

Features: Rain water pools, sand mounds, pebbled crushed brick piles, Split logs and small decaying tree branches, areas targeted for self colonisation and areas seeded with local species to recreate "age old" habitats.

 

Materials Used:

  • Drainage and water reservoir mat made from off cuts from the garment industry -100% recycled and low carbon foot print (Sussex)
  • Crushed brick- 100% recycled (Peterborough)
  • Split logs and branches-100% recycled from sustainable forests and woods (Sussex)
  • Seeds from UK based native British wild flower seed supplier (Norfolk)
  • English rounded pebbles (as opposed to Scottish Caledonian) 100%
  • Iron sand from Leighton Buzzard (Bedfordshire)
  • Stone materials sourced from English quarries/ rivers where applicable

All materials used to construct the brown roof were sourced with the following criteria:

  • A high level of recyclability
  • Low carbon footprint
  • Sustainable supplies
